Abstract
Long piece about Islesford and Great Cranberry Island and the challenges the two islands face. Despite a history of competition, the two islands are united in their struggle to sustain year-round populations. They are two of only 15 true island communities left in Maine, down from around 300 at the turn of the 20th century. There are signs that the islands will hang on: the vote to save Great Cranberry’s school, the hiring of Tom Powell, 33, Great Cranberry’s first resident minister since 1951. Article also gives voice to some of the islands’ residents, including Joy Sprague, the Islesford postmaster, Phil and Karin Whitney, and Richard Beal, among others.
