Abstract

A picture entitled “Domestic Scientists” taken in 1919 of uniformed students ironing in Portland High School laundry lab. The article describes the burgeoning growth of the home economic field and the importance of preparing students for work in homemaking and occupations such as the military, dressmaking, and sewing. Girls in particular benefitted from the classes as it provided a way of entering higher education for them at that time.
