Abstract

Black and white image of the rescue of the crew from the Oakley L. Alexander. On March 3, 1947, when the ship was eight miles out to sea, it lost its steel hull during a storm. Its captain, Raymond Lewis, guided it to run aground at what is now Two Lights State Park in Cape Elizabeth. Rescuers were able to save all 32 men on board.
