Abstract

Since 2000, Atlantic salmon in eight Maine rivers have been protected under the Endangered Species Act. In 2009. Salmon in three other rivers were protected as well. Even so, protecting Maine’s salmon habitat is still a work in progress. The reasons are manyfold and in as many corrections to restoring their original habitat have been made, research biologists have found the answer to reestablishing the species to prior levels to be complicated. The article address the salmon life cycle, habitat preference, man-influenced changes to the habitat, abundance of salmon food sources, and how global warming trends may be influencing their survival.
