Abstract
Rafting pioneer Susie Hockmeyer, estimates she has has rafted the Kennebec between 800 and 1,000 times in the past forty-one years. The first female to get a Maine whitewater guide license, she and her former husband, Wayne Hockmeyer, pioneered a new economy based on outdoor recreation in an area where logging had been the predominant industry. They started Northern Whitewater Expeditions, now Northern Outdoors, owned by Susie Hockmeyer, JIm Yearwood and Russell Walters. [images]
