Abstract

For older adults living on Maine's islands, aging in place is a challenge. Only a few islands have adult family care homes (AFCH) or eldercare homes. The articles examines the challenges of running an AFCH, which include licensing, staffing, and fundraising, all of which are significantly more difficult to accomplish on an island than on the mainland and yet several island communities are successfully providing senior housing.
