Abstract

Lengthy feature piece on Monson, once a dying town with few prospects. The Libra Foundation stepped in and purchased 30 properties in the downtown area, pouring more than $10 million into reviving buildings, improving the region's internet service, and starting Piscataquis County's first artist residency program.Libra's "entrepreneurial philanthropy" approach uses tools of the business world to create social change, although an artist residency is not a standard economic-development tool.
