Abstract
The story of how Westbrook company, American Roots, faced collapse during the COVID-19 pandemic and then re-made itself. The company was founded by Ben and Whitney Waxman in 2014 with the belief that companies should benefit communities, not shareholders. When COVID forced the company to shut down temporarily, the Waxmans converted the factory to produce PPE. All of their staff, 90% of whom were recent immigrants, eventually came back to work to fulfill orders for face masks.
