Abstract

Spurred by the 215-acre parcel of woodland in Kingfield around Shiloh Pond going on the market, local residents contacted the Trust for Public Land. Under Betsy Cook's leadership, the Trust has been advocating for a community forest model. The concept of community forests dates back to early European settlement in Maine, with municipalities or land trusts protecting woodlands for public use. Residents will vote on whether or not to acquire the parcel at Kingfield's annual town meeting.
