Abstract

A look at how Elizabeth Arden, the founder of the cosmetics line that bears her name, invented the modern spa resort in Maine's Belgrade Lakes region. In 1929, Arden purchased a 750-acre property in Mount Vernon which she called Maine Chance Farm. In 1934, she opened for business, targeting society ladies who were not touched by the Depression, offering beauty treatments, exercise, and luxury. The rusticity and freshness of Maine became part of the allure.
