Abstract

A brief profile of William King, Maine's first governor. Highlights his career from successful businessman - dubbed "the sultan of Bath" - through his militia service during the war of 1812; his growing involvement in the separatist movement in Maine; and his leadership of the Maine Constitutional Convention; culminating in King's election as the first governor of the new state in 1820. Stonehouse Farm in Bath, King's longtime summer residence, is described, as is the William King House, a granite lodge central to the property.
