Abstract
Feature piece on John Glowa Sr., founder of the Maine Wolf Coalition, who believes that wolves have returned to Maine, although state agencies like DIFW have seen no evidence of a breeding population in the state. Wolves were extirpated from Maine by the turn of the 20th century by European colonizers who saw them as threats to livestock and to their souls. Glowa collects scat hoping that DNA testing will prove him right. Debates around wolf sightings are complicated by confusion over species designation, especially in cases where wolves and coyotes have interbred. The article also covers Glowa's campaign to challenge Governor Mills in a Democratic primary, and examines his reasons for wanting to run for office.
