Abstract

Profile of Leonard and Mary Jane Cummings of Portland. Both Leonard and Mary Jane (nee Hill) had happy childhoods, but as Black Mainers, they encountered racism as they tried to rent homes and find work in Portland. They turned those hard experiences into fuel for their work with organizations such as the Green Memorial AME Zion Church and the Portland NAACP. One of the causes dearest to their hearts is their work restoring the Abyssinian Meeting House, the country's third-oldest surviving African-American place of worship.
