Abstract

Article begins with the history of the relationship between Bath and Aomori Prefecture in Japan, which dates back to 1889 and the wreck of the merchant ship Cheseborough. Maine scallop farmers are learning a method of raising scallops called ear hanging, which is used in Aomori Prefecture. Though slow when done by hand, there is a piece of machinery from Japan which automates the process. Alex de Koning, of Hollander and deKoning Mussell Processors believes that adding scallops to Maine shellfish farming could help protect Maine fishing from climate change and other threats.
