Essay about the author's mother, a lobsterman's wife in the 1970s, who, like many of her peers, earned extra money cooking, extracting, and packaging the claw meat from crabs caught in her husband's traps. The author meditates on the economic, social, and personal ramifications of crab "picking" in her mother's life.
