Abstract

A dual-language article reflecting on the encroaching demise of "Valley French," the unique version of French long spoken in the St. John Valley of Maine. While describing his researching adventures in Madawaska, the author discusses the history of Acadian, Québécois, and other francophone settlers of Maine and how years of prejudice and maltreatment - particularly in the wake of a 1919 law which forbade the speaking of French in Maine schools - have imperiled the language and culture for their descendants
