Abstract
Brief article describing a mass die-off of hemlock woolly adelgids, which stained the soles of Southern Maine beachgoers black. An invasive species, the pests feed on hemlock trees early in their life cycle then die-off as adults since their preferred tree species does not exist in Maine.
