Abstract

An in-depth look at the Maine Coast Heritage Trust's Rivers Initiative and its work on the Orange River. The Rivers Initiative aims to restore fish passages and preserve riparian ecosystems. The Mill Pond dam on the Orange River in Whiting has no fish ladder to allow passage of anadromous fish. This is one of the projects Jacob van de Sande of MCHT hopes to address. He invites the author on a three-day paddling tour of the river to further explain the history of the coastal rivers, which were important to the Passamaquoddy long before European settlers arrived, and to highlight the conservation efforts that are underway.
