Abstract

An exploration of the history of two islands (collectively known as the Meguntic Islands) in the Bagaduce River, recently renamed Esther and Emanuel in place of their earlier, racially pejorative names. Reflects on the history of Castine's recorded Black citizens - as well as the sparseness of that recorded history and the frequent difficulty of reconstructing the presence and influence of Black people in colonial Maine. Discusses the work of the Place Justice Project to research Maine's place names and how they represent Black and Indigenous peoples.
