Abstract

A compilation of Down East writers' picks for "classic" Maine restaurants - eateries at least 25 years old which are quintessentially "Maine-y." Snippets describe restaurants such as Dysart's Restaurant and Truck Stop, the Great Lost Bear, and the Appalachian Trail Cafe. Interspersed with these selections are the following side-articles: "Beard Approved" notes Maine restaurants which have been awarded the America's Classics Award from the James Beard Foundation; "Ode to the Last Great Red-Sauce Joints," extols both the past and present incarnations of Maria's Ristorante, and mentions other old-fashioned Italian-American restaurants persisting in Maine; "An Unlikely Classic" explores Havana, the restaurant that brought Latin-inspired cuisine and a focus on local produce to Bar Harbor; "Life of Pie" highlights love and loyalty for Helen's Restaurant in Machias and their blueberry pie; "Meals on Wheels" invites a nostalgia trip to Crosby's in Bucksport, and other Maine drive-ins; "Hot Diggity Dog" shares reflections on the enduring popularity of Simones' Hot Dog Stand in Lewiston, courtesy of owner Jimmy Simones; "Diner Notes" lists five "top of the class" Maine diners; "Après Effect" mentions two options for après-ski conviviality; and "The Shack Pack" notes the best of Maine's lobster shacks.
