Abstract

An exploration of the work of Marine Mammals of Maine, an organization which responds to stranded seals and other sea mammals (and sea turtles) along the coast of southern Maine. Describes the work of the small nonprofit monitoring, rescuing, and rehabbing vulnerable animals. Discusses how rebounding populations of seals in Maine's coastal waters have led to an increase in interactions between seals and humans, causing a surge in work for rehabbers. Notes negative public opinion about seals - including the belief that seals deplete commercial fish populations, and concerns about an increased shark presence in seal-rich waters - and how these negative beliefs complicate the work of the Marine Mammals crew.
