Abstract

Artist Fairfield Porter used to summer at his family's Great Spruce Head Island in Penobscot Bay, which was purchased by Porter's father James in 1912. Porter, a thoughtful art critic and intellectual, died in 1975 at age 68. His work is receiving new consideration due to a traveling exhibition and the recently-published "Fairfield Porter: An American Classic," by John T. Spike.
