Abstract

Portland Public Library Executive Director Steve Podgajny gives a tour of the soon-to-reopen, newly renovated library, showing visitors the new glassed-in front with cafe-style seating on Congress Street, with radiant-heated floors and a soaring ceiling. In addition, the renovated building has new bathrooms, an open staircase, an expanded Rines Auditorium, five meeting rooms, gathering and computer spaces designed to handle noise, a new Children's Room, lower book stacks, a new teen area with its own entrance opposite Portland High School's "Freshman Alley," and flat-screen monitors to display information. Podgajny says of the teen room, "We've made a huge commitment of square footage and of belief in these kids," and of the library as a whole that it "really embraces downtown now, instead of walling it off."
