Abstract

"Letters" piece responding to Halsey Frank's criticisms of the Portland Public Library's plan to move into the former Public Market building. Though the space is smaller, the move would create a true popular library in the city. Most of the materials currently available in the open stacks of the library will remain accessible directly to the public. In addition, the open design of the market will be preserved through large windows and a full atrium. The lack of foot traffic that doomed the market will not affect the library, as it is a unique destination.
