Abstract

Ballast rocks, used as many as four thousand years ago and still found on a few foreign cargo ships, serve as clues to Maine's maritime commerce of the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. Ships would pick them up along their travels to stabilize their cargos and discard them along the harbors and coast of Maine. Although amateur beachcombers are likely to be disappointed, geologists and historians can search for clues to the origins of Maine-bound ships by scientific beachcombing.
