Abstract
Portland Harbor fortifications date to the founding of Fort Preble in 1807 on Spring Point, followed fifty years later by Fort Gorges on Hog Island Ledge. Post-Civil War technology required new defenses, including the harbor's largest battery, at Fort McKinley on Great Diamond Island. After World War II, submarine defenses were no longer necessary, and the forts were abandoned. Details.
