Abstract

Around the turn of the century, Deer Isle seamen manned many of the top America's Cup racing yachts. In 1895, an all-Deer Isle crew raced the "Defender" to a defeat over the British, who forfeited, and in 1899 they defeated the Royal Ulster Yacht club of Belfast, Ireland. Details.
