Abstract
Between 1977 and 1980, all 1,500 pairs of terns disappeared from Petit Manan Island, and throughout the state terns have diminished. Sea gulls, who themselves had to be restored in numbers by the Maine Legislature's 1901 bird protection law, had devoured the herring essential to terns' diet. Maine conservationists are debating whether to poison gulls on the state's few island tern colonies. Details; Jamie Wyeth painting.
