Abstract

The inauguration of the Maine State Ferry Service on March 4, 1960, began the "Ferry Years" on Swan's Island, lifting the island out the isolation caused by the commandeering of its steamboat for World War II use. The ferry changed the island forever, tethering it to its new base at Mackerel Cove rather than the Rockland and Stonington fishing communities. On Vinalhaven, by contrast, the length and cost of the ferry trip has limited rather than encouraged growth. Detailed history of the ferries' creation, historical photos.
