Abstract

Fifty years ago, anyone with a boat was welcome to explore all the Maine islands, inhabited or not. Today, people are more protective. White Island has been turned into a bird sanctuary, The Nature Conservancy owns all of Damariscove except the abandoned Coast Guard station, and Isle au Haut's Duck Harbor is mobbed with tourists. Friendly island customs have been replaced by rules and more active stewardship. Details.
