Abstract
Description of a 1945 visit to Bartlett's Island, off Mount Desert, by photographer Kosti Ruohomaa. In 1939 Bartlett's Island was bought by radio producer and Bowdoin graduate Phillip Haynes Lord. During the 16 years that he owned the island, Lord revived farming, husbandry, weir-fishing and boatbuilding. Ruohomaa moved to Rockland with his family when he was almost 13, and went on to study commercial art in Boston. He was under contract with New York-based Black Star Publishing Co., when he documented the weekend he spent on Bartlett's with Lord, his family and friends.
