Abstract

Residents of Vinalhaven have an awareness and shared pride of the musical community on the island. The year-round population of 1,300 includes classical groups, a marching band, folk duos and tiros, vocal groups, church choirs and rock and country bands. Jamie Thomas's music studio is a social center of life on the island, bringing together a diverse mix of island groups. With a related article on Candyce Dunham, harpist and music teacher, who has transformed music education on Swan's Island. Dunham's efforts include the creation of a 19-member harp ensemble. The harps were built on the island and funded through a grant from the Island Institute.
