Abstract

Article on the painter Gretchen Dow Simpson, who first visited Maine at the age of 12. Simpson started submitting sketches to "The New Yorker" in 1970, and eventually started doing realistic paintings, frequently based on architecture. From 1978 - 1988 Simpson regularly visited Islesboro, and many of her painting involve Maine subjects. Of the more than 65 paintings that were used as covers by "The New Yorker," two were inspired by Maine islands.
