Abstract

The first case of drug smuggling along the Maine coast appeared in the press in 1977, but the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency says the public is only aware of one-tenth of Maine drug smuggling. By 1973, the DEA noted that at least half a dozen drug smugglers had taken up residence in Maine, and the DEA, local law enforcement, and Coast Guard began tracking smugglers in the 1970s and 80s.
