Abstract

This past summer, Philip Conkling, president of the Island Institute, accompanied an expedition of scientists studying abrupt climate change on a trip to Greenland to explore why the Viking Norse settlement there collapsed in the 1400s, after nearly 500 years of successful occupation. The company included George Denton, a glacial geologist from the University of Maine. A Norse coin and Viking runes found in Maine have led some to believe Vikings traveled here. With details on the expedition.
