Abstract
Had the state legislature not extended the deadline for towns to close their unlicensed dumps, Chebeague, Frenchboro, Islesboro, North Haven, Swan's Island, and Vinalhaven would have been without landfills on January 1. The five landfills, which predate the Department of Environmental Protection, leach into the islands's sole-source aquifers. They are looking for ideas from other islands like Peaks, which started barging recyclables to Portland, and Monhegan, which began composting when prohibited from throwing its trash into the ocean.
