Abstract

For many years, Great Spruce Head Island served as a inspiration for painter Fairfield Porter, his brother, the photographer Eliot Porter, and Fairfield Porter's friend and frequent island guest, the Pulitzer Prize-winning poet James Schuyler. Fairfield Porter and his family summered on Great Spruce Head every year and often invited other artists and writers to join them in the island's residence called the "Big House". Porter's niece, Anina Porter, continues this tradition and annually invites writers, artists, and musicians to the island. The article includes paintings and poetry created on the island.
