Abstract

Profile of Captain James Hardie, caretaker on Bear Island, a family-owned island in Penobscot Bay, from 1910 until 1946. Much of his life is known from his correspondence with members of the Fuller family, including Buckminster Fuller. Hardie taught himself to read and write; his letters detail his activities as fisherman, boatman, hunter, carpenter, farmer, and family man.
