Abstract

Essay in which the author and editor of the journal celebrates Island Journal's 30th anniversary and reflects on his involvement with the venture as he prepares to hand the reins over to the next generation of leaders. He discusses the ecological framework that guides the work of the Island Institute, the importance of not speaking for islanders but allowing them to speak for themselves, and the Island Fellows who argued that Maine's islands could serves as models for the country, thus attracting national funding for the Institute.
