Abstract

Piece about the modern-day lighthouse keepers of New England's most remote islands, the people who manage the diesel generators that power the grid. From Monhegan to Matinicus and Star Island, NH , men like Chris Smith, Paul Murray, and Jack Farrell work hard to keep the lights on and respond quickly to power outages, while trying to figure out alternatives to costly diesel. Islanders from Maine to Block Island, RI, and Cuttyhunk, MA, have to contend with electric rates that are close to 70 cents/kWh, roughly four times what people on the mainland pay.
