Abstract

Maine state fisheries management plans are usually based on a free-market system and do not give enough consideration to habitat issues and sustainable harvest levels. Indigenous approaches, which the Passamaquoddy historical have done, take into account mutual respect towards each other and the ecosystem as a whole, which the author argues will create a healthier resource base. Elver, bass, and alewive fishing are discussed.
