Abstract

A brief history of the Maine State Ferry Service, established in 1960, and a look at how it changed island life (for better and for worse). The state service initially served Vinalhaven, North Haven, Islesboro, and Swan's Island. Matinicus petitioned for ferry service in the 1970s when the old wooden mail boat became unrepairable. All 15 inhabited islands have different transportation needs.
