Abstract
The Pleasant River is home to the last commercial smelt gillnet fishery on the eastern seaboard. Dwayne Shaw, the executive director of the Downeast Salmon Federation, cares deeply about the river, the fish, and the culture around smelt fishing and has been trying to prove to the state that the fishery is viable.
