Abstract
Island historical societies keep alive the rich lore of island history. Most maintain small summer museums. On Isle au Haut, town librarian Virginia MacDonald is the one-person historical society; on North Haven, Lewis Haskell's 1976 discovery of town records at the dump has grown into the North Haven Historical Society; the Islesboro Historical Society has been researching and publishing town history; Frenchboro, Swan's Island, Monhegan, and Chebeague display island artifacts; and on Peaks Island the community center has taken over the Fifth Maine Regiment's collection of Civil War items.
