Abstract

By all accounts, Portland Stage Company should be out of business. Ticket prices cover only half of production costs, and it employs only professional, union actors. However, it relies on government and private donations for only 37.8 percent of its income, below the national 40 percent average. Government support for the arts is decreasing, and businesses are beginning to use art underwriting as a marketing tool.
