Abstract

The Portland Boxing Club in Morrill's Corner has brought amateur boxing back to the city. Boxing was very popular in Portland in the 1960s, but the lack of an amateur program caused the sport to die out. The Club gym, combined with the popular Friday Night Fights, has turned out a new crop of Portland boxers, including David Lawhorn, the second person in the history of Maine to make the Olympic boxing trials.
