Abstract

The Portland Fish Exchange must cope with a decline in groundfish stocks, which have been its primary product since its founding in 1986. The greatest declines have been in "money fish," market favorites like cod, haddock (down 63 percent), and yellowtail flounder. Yet activity in the refrigerated auction room remains bustling, and a bumper crop of winter shrimp have offset some of the losses. Details.
