    Abstract

Profile of the Maine Ice Boating Championships, hosted by the Chickawaukie Ice Boat Club on Damariscotta Lake. Eligible craft are DN Ice Boats, named for the Detroit News, whose design contest led to their invention in 1937. An ice boat in a 15-mile-an-hour wind can easily travel 60 mph, making ice boating the fastest form of sailing. This year's winner was Richard Saltonstall, although he accepted the prize reluctantly, saying that winning and losing are secondary to the thrill of sailing.
