    Abstract

The Freeport Merchant's Association has opened a new information center by the railroad tracks, which FMA director Elizabeth Gleason predicts will soon carry passengers from Boston. Despite below-projection winter sales, she expects a good tourist season. Freeport differs from other outlet locations in that it is a New England village, not a mall, and aspires to an upscale character. The stores that can afford Freeport rents are those that can attract shoppers from literally around the world, particularly Europe and Japan.
