    Abstract

Schlotterbeck and Foss is Maine's oldest family-owned food products company. It was founded in an 1866 merger between a patent medicine and flavor extract company. By 1950, the retail extract trade was undermined by cake mixes, so they confined their extract trade to commercial customers, although they continue to make their own and private label salad dressings. Its John Calvin Stevens-designed warehouse is a Portland landmark.
